Book Review of Harbor’s Edge by Sanne Rothman

Sanne Rothman’s young adult thriller, Harbor’s Edge, piques the curiosity while romancing the imagination, with a story that offers mystery, the supernatural, budding romance, and an intelligent 14-year-old heroine on a profoundly insightful journey to self-discovery.

The story is set in beautiful Hawaii with which author Sanne Rothman does a wonderful job of detailing the beautiful environment. She brings forth both its timeless natural beauty as well as artfully presents intriguing aspects of Hawaiian life and culture especially with her incorporation of the lore of the dark and ancient sea monsters called The Mo’o, the legend, and mystery of which is initially contemplated by Harbor early on in the story.

Initially, as the story unfolds, we meet Harbor, a young, resilient, intelligent teenager who finds her life shrouded in mystery and sadness. Having lost both her parents under mysterious circumstances, she fights with feelings of abandonment as she seeks to solve the mystery of what truly happened. She lost her F.B.I. agent father to a cold-blooded murderer and her mother, who disappeared without a trace, leaving her and her younger sister Fig in the care of their TuTu (grandmother). TuTu owns a popular, local restaurant, featuring Hawaiian hamburgers and Harbor works at the restaurant in the drive-through which allows her the opportunity to practice analyzing the faces of customers based on techniques from her father’s FBI profiling manuals. She works on her skills at analyzing faces in the hopes of finding clues to her father’s murderer and clues to her missing mother.

Overall a story filled with well-plotted twists and turns fueled by excitement and building tensions when children begin to turn up missing and Harbor thinks she may have a lead. Moreover, the story carries a mystery within a mystery as Harbor makes a friend at school, Keyne, with whom the sparks of first love begin to ignite, however, he seems to have an air of secrecy surrounding him as well.

Altogether, Harbor’s Edge turned out to be both an imaginative and absorbing read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I found myself instantly drawn into the beautifully set world of Harbor, shrouded in mystery, supernatural legacy, and artfully fueled with intriguing plot twists including, the unique inclusion of clues disbursed within each chapter. Additionally, I also enjoyed the likable characters within the story, especially that of Harbor. She’s a relatable and intelligent character, easy to sympathize with and whose exciting journey to self-discovery was easy to follow. Absolutely, a worthwhile and noteworthy read that left me wanting more. I look forward to Book 2, Keyne, and The Wrath of The Mo’o. Overall, this would make a good choice for an end of summer read and I recommend it.

The Miraculous Lives in Your Consciousness of Righteousness

You have heard the stories; you’ve seen the TV shows and YouTube videos of miracles still taking place today. You have no doubt witnessed the blind man see and the cripple woman in the wheel chair jump up and walk. How about a man who instantaneously grew a new ear drum after being deaf in that ear for 54 years? Or a woman whose muscular sclerosis suddenly vanished or a woman healed of asthma after more than 50 years? Do you believe such things still happen today?

If you do, then it is very likely that your belief in the miraculous comes with a side of self-doubt. That is, you may believe that it is possible for that television preacher to lay hands on the sick and they recover, or for that famous faith healer with the gigantic church to perform the supernatural on a weekly basis. However, your belief, of course, stops short at you.

If someone asked you to come down to the front of the church and lay hands on the sick and heal them, sheer panic would seize your body and disbelief would take over your mind, and this is the problem.

In the groundbreaking book, “The Consciousness of Righteousness: How to Release God’s Power Within You!” the author explains that the power of God and the supernatural touch of our Lord Jesus Christ is in all of us that have been saved. Once born again, you are the likeness of Him; you can do what Jesus did while He walked the earth, and even greater things than He did. The Bible makes that clear in John 14:12.

“I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, if anyone steadfastly believes in Me, he will himself be able to do the things that I do; and he will do even greater things than these,because I go to the Father.” —John 14:12(AMPC)

It does not depend on your own self-confidence and it is not about you having or not having enough faith. The supernatural lies within your own consciousness. It is not about your faith to believe in a particular situation; it is about your existing, walking and living in the continuous consciousness of God’s righteousness.

Salvation involves much more than just the forgiveness of your sins. Jesus changed places with you; not only taking your sinfulness, but He gave you His righteousness! However, most of us only think about and concentrate on the sin side of the equation in that Jesus forgave our sins, and therefore we need to avoid sin. This “sin consciousness” is the problem. Instead of a sin consciousness, we need to focus on and come to actualize the consciousness of righteousness.

The above miracles, by the way, are true. Mark lost his left eardrum when he was six years old. The ear drum reappeared while at a small Bible study meeting.

Linda suffered from severe asthma since birth, until she came to a small Bible study class. Now for the first time in 52 years, and to the astonishment of her doctors, Linda tossed away the medications and breathing machines.

These miraculous occurrences and many more, did not take place at some mega-church or multi-million dollar television broadcast, but at a small Bible study session in the author’s home.

Miracle healers are not special people; they simply live in the consciousness of righteousness, as you can too.
